Mom helps deliver baby in car on shoulder of I-270

Posted: Updated:

There were some frantic moments on Interstate 270 near Exit 15 Thursday morning. 911 calls for a delivery in progress sent a Montgomery County fire truck and ambulance racing to the scene. But when they got there shortly after 6:12 a.m., it was too late. The baby was already born.

She is a girl and she has two moms. The 911 operator heard an anxious woman's voice tell her the baby was already delivered.

The operator asked, "Are you the one who delivered the baby?"

"Yes," she answered.

The operator asked if the baby was breathing or crying and gave instructions about wiping the baby's nose and mouth and wrapping her with a cloth of warm clothing.

Arriving paramedics took it from there. EMT Michael Barclay took out his O.B. kit and helped with the cutting of the umbilical cord.

Paramedic Kyle Badstibner called it "a flawless birth. It couldn't have gone better, except for the part it was on the side of the road."

They rushed baby and her other mom to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, where we understand everyone is doing fine.
