Fake ad created for Detroit 'going out of business sale'

Jerry Vile, the artist behind the giant Crisco can by the Joe Louis Fist, is at it again. This time everything must go.

A phoney "Motor City going out of business sale" ad was placed in the Metro Times. Some of the items listed for sale included "Special limited Kwame edition" Lincoln Navigators, SkyTel pagers and the "largest inventory of abandoned property on the planet" with the "copper not included".

"It is a funny way to laugh at like one of the worst, most horrible things that has happened to the city," Vile said. "Everything in Detroit's for sale."

Tuesday, he and a few friends also hung price tags from various Detroit landmarks to prove it. They thought that would be funny, too.

"It's a little satirical, but it's true. They're talking about this stuff. Put tags on the DIA. That's not a new concept," said Rick Manore.

Meanwhile, the Crisco can was auctioned off Wednesday night at the Music Hall. In the end, it sold for $1,300.

"I'm giving it away to a charity of the city's choice or just a charity," Vile said.

In all seriousness, they want people to understand that we need to keep as much of Detroit as possible.

Both the offices of the mayor and emergency manager declined comment for this story.
