Church holds meeting on Falcons stadium negotiations

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

City and state officials met with members of a downtown Atlanta church on Tuesday in hopes of breaking a stalemate over a site for the new Falcons stadium.

Mount Vernon Baptist Church sits in the midst of a potential site for the new billion-dollar stadium. The church has been offered $6.2 million, but is asking for in excess of $20 million.

A neighboring church, Friendship Baptist, has already reached a $19 million deal with the city for their property.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed left Tuesday's meeting without speaking to reporters, but former Mayor Andrew Young, who was also in attendance, said it was productive.

"We just had an information sharing session about some of the live options that they should consider, and the mayor made a commitment that he would continue working with them, that he was committed to fulfilling this project and making sure that the city continued its growth and development," Young said.

Church members said little about the meeting as they left.  The church's pastor, the Rev. Rodney Turner, described it as a "good meeting."

"We feel good anyway, because God is in control," Turner said. "Pray for us, we're asking everybody to continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers."

The Georgia World Congress Center Authority is evaluating another potential site, which is located north of the Georgia Dome.
