WAUKEGAN, Ill. (Associated Press) -

A Waukegan man was sentenced to 48 years in prison for the murder of his wife more than a decade ago.

Ruben Contreras was sentenced Monday in the death of Graciela Guijarro. He was given credit for 5 1/2 years, the time spent in Lake County Jail awaiting trial.

Prosecutors say the 34-year-old Guijarro was visiting her estranged husband May 26, 2002 when he grabbed her from behind and placed his hand over her mouth and nose. The move cut off her ability to breathe. Contreras later placed her body in brush along the Des Plaines River. He then fled to Mexico.

The FBI, in 2008, found Contreras living in Cuernavaca, Mexico. He was arrested and extradited to the U.S.

Defense attorney Christopher Lombardo says he will appeal the sentence.
