Rip currents, 7ft waves prompt Chicago beach warning

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The National Weather Service is advising beachgoers to stay out of Lake Michigan on Tuesday because of dangerous swimming conditions, including strong rip currents and waves up to seven feet high.

The beach hazard statement issued by the weather service Tuesday morning states that strong rip currents could quickly pull swimmers away from shore. Waves between four and seven feet are expected.

The advisory remains in effect until late Tuesday night.

North winds between 15 and 25 mph are expected Tuesday, but those should diminish to 10 to 15 mph by Wednesday, according to the weather service.
