A grand jury has indicted an Arlington County sheriff’s deputy with one count of murder in the fatal shooting of 22-year-old man in Alexandria.

44-year-old Craig Patterson is charged in the shooting death of Julian Dawkins in the Del Ray section of Alexandria on May 22. Investigators say he was off duty at the time and got into an argument with Dawkins before the shooting.

Patterson was also indicted with one count of the use of a firearm in the commission of murder.

Family and friends say Dawkins was attending a family celebration in the area, blocks away from where Patterson lived.

Dawkins was a driver for the PBS NewsHour program -- shuttling tapes, guests and paperwork among various PBS work centers.

Patterson was a 17-year veteran of the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office.

The Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office says Patterson faces a maximum of life in prison for the murder charge and a mandatory three years in prison for the firearm charge.

No trial date has been set.
