DETROIT (WJBK) -

It is a crime that has caught many who work near the Renaissance Center off guard. Depending on the time of day, it is a well-traveled place, but tragedy can happen anywhere, at anytime, to anyone.

"My heart feels horrible for the person who is trying to be the good Samaritan, and then they end up being almost like penalized basically by doing the right thing," said Laeki Hester.

According to police, a 59-year-old man stopped to help a couple of women who may have been robbed just before 1 a.m. Monday. When that good Samaritan tried to stop the suspect near Atwater and St. Antoine, we were told he was shot. We have since learned that victim worked for the Renaissance Center.

"As long as I've been working here, it's always been a safe environment. So I am just floored," Hester said.

Several people we spoke to said they feel at ease in the area because of the security and shuttles provided by the businesses nearby, but what happened definitely has them thinking twice and unfortunately might have others, too.

"You want to go and help people and support people, but at the same time, something like that tragic where someone gets injured or shot for that matter, that's very disturbing," "discouraging from the standpoint of make people second guess doing the right thing."

Police are still searching for whoever shot that good Samaritan. If you have any information that you feel might be useful to investigators, you are asked to give Detroit Police a call.
