MMA Manager Ed Soares Talks RFA, Anderson Silva

Posted: Updated:

Helping to guide the careers of Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida among others, Ed Soares has long been known as a master of managing mixed martial arts stars, but is now getting heavily involved on the promoting side of the business.

As president of the Resurrection Fighting Alliance, Soares sat down with Cage Talk host James Koh to discuss his promotion and gave his take on his longtime client and friend, Anderson Silva.

"As soon as I came on board one of the things I decided to do was become the developmental organization for the UFC," Soares said. "The UFC is the NFL and the RFA, we are the college football of mixed martial arts."

Soares, the lifelong South Bay resident said he is extremely excited to be bringing the RFA to near his hometown as RFA 9 will at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, August 16th.

"I was born in Inglewood, raised in Redondo," Soares said.  "I went to Washington Elementary, Adams Junior High, went to Redondo and Mira Costa High schools.  My first job was at E.T. Surfboards!"

When asked about Silva, Soares said stunning knockout loss to Weidman "woke up and snapped (him) out of a lot of things."

"I hate to say it but I think this might have been a good thing," Soares said.  "It's horrible to see a guy, he's not only my client but he's my friend, my family and to see him knocked out on the canvas bothered me a lot, but I know what he's capable of doing and I know he'll be back on top again."

Regarding Jon Jones, Soares remains extremely confident in Silva's ability to beat the light heavyweight champion should that fight ever come to fruition.

"I believe Anderson Silva is the best fighter on the planet period," Soares said. "I think he'll beat (Jones).  Not taking anything away from Jon Jones.  Incredible athlete but he doesn't have the experience and I think that a well-trained Anderson Silva would beat Jon Jones."
