Susan G. Komen 3-day walk bids farewell to Chicago

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It may be the last Susan G. Komen 3-day walk in Chicago and six other cities but make no mistake, participants plan to keep the tradition alive.

"People are going to be using social media to kind of connect and hook up and see where we're going to hook up again," said Maureen Quaid.

Quaid is a six year breast cancer survivor and Soldier Field was filled with thousands of similar stories crossing the finish line for the last time.

"You see each other every year and you connect and you know what's going on in everybody's lives and then for a year we kind of do our own thing," said Quaid.

This year Komen struck a chord and some controversy when it pulled its grants to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer services. By the time it reversed the decision, it was too late - support hit an all-time low forcing the foundation to cancel its marquee 3-day walks in cities across the country.

"The controversy did create challenges but it was only one of many factors but if there's one word to describe our 3-day participants it is determined. They came out here and they're not going to allow a controversy to effect or overshadow a generation of positive progress," said Dr. Sheri Phillips, spokesperson for Susan G. Komen's 3-Day Walk.

Progress that will fuel pockets of loyal Komen 3-day walk participants will continue walking, with or without Komen's support.

"We're deeply saddened knowing that this is the last walk, we're going to walk more, in San Diego, we're going to keep walking," said Terrell Taylor, a husband of a breast cancer survivor.

Though Komen urges its participants here to join the foundation's other activities in the city and abroad.

"The Chicagoland affiliate puts on two Race for the Cures, one on Mother's Day in May and the next one in Lombard in September which will actually be held this September 22nd in Lombard so we encourage our 3-day participants to reach out to the local affiliate and to consider traveling to any one of our seven markets that we'll be in in 2014," said Phillips.
