Mitch Albom joins fight against blight in Detroit's Brightmoor neighborhood

Volunteers will once again take to the streets of the city's Brightmoor neighborhood this weekend to flight blight and secure more than 500 vacant lots.

Author Mitch Albom says he's teaming up with Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, Bill Pulte and the Blight Authority for the event Saturday morning. Volunteers plan to plant wildflower seeds, clean up the streets and create urban gardens in an area that spans over 14 city blocks.

"When people come down and do something and they go home with dirt in their fingernails and they say, 'this is a piece of the city and I helped do something for my city,' it changes them," said Albom. "They're vested in it and that's all it really takes."

The area for years has been used for illegal dumping. Officials say over the past few months, volunteers have collected more than 200 tires and 70,000 pounds of debris, trash and dead forestry.

The Brightmoor project is the second for the Blight Authority. It initially worked in a 10-block area across from a school near the city's Eastern Market area. The group's chairman is Bill Pulte, a grandson of the founder of homebuilder PulteGroup Inc.
