Proposed landfill draws opposition in Macomb County

RAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

A proposal calls for a landfill to be placed between 27 and 28 Mile east of Gratiot in New Haven 7and Lenox Township.

There is a large wave of opposition to the proposed landfill, which was visible at an informational town hall meeting Wednesday night at Endeavour Middle School.

The New Haven Village Council voted 5-2 to enter into an agreement with Rizzo Environmental, which would operate the proposed landfill.

Some in the audience said they were not aware of the proposal until it was voted on by the village council.

"My husband is a kidney transplant patient. We moved into this community in 2003. There was no mention of anything like this. He's not allowed to mow the lawn because of the bacteria that's stirred up from lawn mowing. Something like this absolutely could kill him. His immune system is suppressed," said Karen Hea.

"What they're saying is because of the mismanagement of previous people that have run the board and run the town, we're supposed to pay for their mismanagement? That's not right. I would rather see this go to bankruptcy or maybe an emergency manager," said Tony Albacelli.

What's the benefit for New Haven and Lenox Township?

"There's significant benefits to taxpayers, but the number one would be that there would be competition in Macomb County, not just one landfill where everything's going, and they're setting prices that are higher for American municipalities than for Canadian municipalities," said Rizzo spokesperson Joe Munem.

New Haven Council Member Terry Tidwell voted no on the landfill proposal.

"It really stinks the way they brought it to us. They brought it to us 24 hours before the meeting, and they proposed that it was a community development project when it actually turned out to be a landfill," he said.

The state also needs to approve this proposal. That has not happened, and there is no timetable for when it may happen.

There is already one landfill in the area.
