A judge ruled there is probable cause and a grand jury will hear the murder case against Arlington County Sheriff's Deputy Craig Patterson.

He was off duty on the night of May 22. Investigators say he got into an argument in an Alexandria neighborhood.

At Patterson's preliminary hearing Tuesday, one neighbor testified she heard Patterson tell resident Julian Dawkins: "I'll be back. You best believe I'll be back." Minutes later, Dawkins was shot in the chest.

Patterson called 911. A recording of the call was played in court. Patterson told the 911 operator: "I'm calling in reference to me being involved in a shooting. Just had a young man pull a knife on me and I shot him."

In court, a crime scene technician identified a photo she had taken of a folding knife closed and clipped to Dawkins pocket when he died.

"That was my only child,” says Dawkins’ mother, Gwen Pratt-Miller. “I don't have a lot to say. I'm just still in shock with the whole situation and I just want to see justice done.”
