Apartment residents forced to leave over unpaid water bill

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of College Park apartment residents have learned they must leave their homes within 30 days after the city says property owners haven't paid the water bill.

City officials say water will be shut off in September at Turnbury Apartments because the water bill payment is delinquent.

A College Park city spokesperson told FOX 5 that he didn't have an exact number on how much is owed, but said that the city can't continue to overlook what is past due.

A spokesperson from the company that manages the apartment complex told FOX 5's Julia Reynolds that they've been paying the water bill since they took over last August. That person said that the $168,000 water bill was from previous management and owner.

Now residents are scrambling to vacate their apartments.

Adriana Goodgame said she just moved in last month.

"Why would you let us move here?  Let me sign a lease without telling me what's going on," Goodgame said.

As some residents loaded their belongings up to move on Monday, community advocates walked the grounds hoping to help residents make a transition to another complex.

"Hopefully someone will help because it's not their fault. These people work. It's just a bad situation," said Nicole Guyton.

Residents brought their concerns to the College Park City Council meeting on Monday. Councilmember Tracy Wyatt told those residents that he'd meet with them next week to try and work out a transition.

The complex management company will meet with the city's attorney later this week to try and come to an agreement.

If nothing changes, residents will have to be out by Sept. 5.
