170 get tuberculosis testing at Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Va. -

Health officials in Fairfax County have expanded their tuberculosis testing after three people had active tuberculosis cases at Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield this past academic year.

The health department sent letters to 1,900 students, teachers and staffers who either attended or worked at the school encouraging them to be tested. That was after an earlier suggestion back in June that about 490 people who might have had exposure be screened.

About 60 percent of the 490 people first contacted in June came in for testing. Health Department spokesman Glen Barbour says five to six percent of those born in the U.S. had a positive result.

Most parents we spoke to said they were pleased the testing was being done.
