DETROIT (WJBK) -

Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr stoked the social media flames over the weekend following his comments in an article published in Friday's Wall Street Journal.

Critics accused Orr of characterizing the residents of the now bankrupt city as 'dumb and lazy.' In the article, Orr says:

"For a long time the city was dumb, lazy, happy and rich. Detroit has been the center of more change in the 20th century than I dare say virtually any other city, but that wealth allowed us to have a covenant [that held] if you had an eighth grade education, you'll get 30 years of a good job and a pension and great health care, but you don't have to worry about what's going to come."

The comment didn't sit well with, among others, Darrel Dawsey from Deadline Detroit, who appeared on FOX 2's Let it Rip over the weekend.

"Kevyn Orr obviously doesn't know anything about the history of working people in Detroit," says Dawsey. "One thing Detroiters have not been, and are not, is lazy."

But Orr spokesman Bill Nowling tells FOX 2 that the emergency manager's comments referred to "the political class of Detroit that, for the last half-century, has let the city sink into dysfunction and disrepair."

We want to know what you think. Was Orr spot-on in his assessment of Detroit's decline? Or was it an overboard comment?
