Highway officials say Americans will drive about 264 billion miles this month, trying to get in those last minute road trips before school resumes.
They are warning motorists that all that volume and those long trips make August the deadliest month to drive. Four of the worst days are between August 1st and Labor Day.
" So far it's been a little rough," Karen Ortega Marshal said, as she filled up her car in Reston, Virginia. She's traveling from New York to Florida, and she's doing all the driving. It hasn't been fun.
" Too much traffic, drivers have no manners,"she says.
John Townsend of AAA Mid-Atlantic says more drivers on the road for longer trips are the biggest problem, but drowsy drivers are huge hazards too in August.
"We finding more people are killing themselves in single vehicle crashes because they got sleepy behind the wheel, "Townsend says.
He suggest drivers, " buckle up and take frequent breaks" so they can stay alert on the road.
" I plan to drive about ten hours and look for a hotel," Marshal says. " Then it's back on the road in the morning, after my coffee."
July 4th is the deadliest day to drive. Here's the complete list of the worst ten days to hit the road.
