Atlanta hosts World Youth Open Bridge Championships

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

How much do you know about the card game known as bridge?  A lot of people think it's for the older crowd, but kids from around the world— from Argentina to Turkey to China and beyond—traveled to Atlanta for just one reason: to play bridge.

Atlanta is the host city for the World Youth Open Bridge Championships.  It's been 20 years since it was last in the U.S.  There's a big push to teach kids to play bridge before card games disappear altogether.

"Kids who play bridge show an increase in their scores in standardized tests in school," said Patty Tucker, a youth bridge organizer.

"Mostly the logic and the math part of it, because you have to think about it," said Andrew Jeng, a young bridge player from Georgia.  "Every new hand of bridge is unique.  So, that makes bridge not that boring at all."

Jeng partners up with his brother Andrew.  They're from Johns Creek, and both have been at it for 7 years—though Andrew claims to be better at it.

Bridge remains popular in America.  This week, Atlanta is also hosting the American Bridge Championships at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.  More than 5,000 players are in town to take part.
