Fans Excited To See '93 Team Reunion

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A big alumni weekend will be wrapped up at Citizen's Bank Park. The Phillies will honor the 1993 National League champion team in an on-field ceremony before the Phillies play the Atlanta Braves.

The blue collar '93 team celebrates it's 30th anniversary.

The highlight of the weekend so far was Darren Daulton making an appearance one month after brain surgery to remove a highly malignant tumor.

Fans, especially those alive when the team played, spoke to FOX 29 about the special night.

"Brings me back to my childhood. A team that went from worse to first. A lot of excitement." says a fan.

"A bunch of bad letters, you know, sort of signified what Philadelphia was about, underdogs, just kept fighting," reflects another fan. "Loved them! Loved them."

There were hugs and smiles as the alumni recalled the days of old. Then the leaders from that era threw out the first pitch for tonight's game. The crowd went wild seeing big names like John Kruk appear on the field again. Fans hailed the team that made the City of Brotherly Love believe again.

"They were a bunch of tough, hard-nosed, overweight hustlers who said we're going to just do it. And did it," recalls a fan.

"I was 16 years old. I couldn't get enough of that team. Made me a baseball fan. Hard scrapple attitude. They played hard every night," recalls another fan.

Nostalgia was more reason to tailgate in great weather before Sunday night's match up against the Braves. Regardless of tonight's turn out, reliving the history is what the night is really about.

"A lot of fun watching that team. Nobody expecting to do anything and they really came out of nowhere and did some wonderful things," concludes a fan.

FOX 29's Howard Eskin interviewed broadcaster Gary Matthews in the studio tonight. Matthews gave his breakdown on why the Phillies are struggling and what could be done. Matthews placed the blame mostly on the players, who he said should do their jobs better. He predicted that it will take two or three years for the Phillies to be a real contender.
