Mesa Police shoot wanted man in wheelchair during struggle

Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -

The Mesa Police department is investigating a shooting that involved three of it's own officers. The suspect is dead after allegedly trying to pull a gun on them.
According to a spokesperson for the department, the suspect, who was later identified as Chris Allan Chipman, was armed with three weapons.

We're told the officers felt they had no choice but to shoot.

"I was putting the trash in when I saw the cop cars. As soon as I heard the gunshots I dropped to the ground, just instinct I guess," said Debbie Washington. "Then the ambulance came, all the cops came. I saw them working on somebody, but I don't think he made it."

"The suspect is a 49-year-old white male. He does have multiple involvements with us, several this year," said Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato.

Landato says the suspect was wheelchair bound, but that he was also armed.

Officers approached him after realizing he was wanted on felony drug charges.

"The knives were not pulled, the officers were able to remove those from the waistband. It was when the subject realized the officers knew that he had a weapon on him that he grabbed for the weapon and it was a struggle over that, getting his hand off of his weapon," said Landato.

Landato says three officers were on scene and one fired at the suspect.
Area residents worry the neighborhood is becoming increasingly dangerous.

Those like Washington are making the decision to get away from the violence.

"I'm ready to go. I'm ready to move," said Washington.

The three officers involved in the incident have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the investigation.

This was the department's third officer involved shooting this year.
