Facebook post accuses saleswomen of recruiting sex slaves

Posted: Updated:
GILBERT, Ariz. -

Gilbert police say this rumor is not true -- this is a legitimate children's book company.  They bring students in from Europe to sell books which help pay for their college expenses.

"I was feeling so sad.. why people are calling the police on me? I don't do anything wrong."

Maria Fristikova goes door to door selling children's books -- in triple digit heat -- running from house to house so she talks to more families. She says people used to be nice to her -- until a nasty rumor was started on Facebook.

"I feel like oh, everybody look at me, what I'm doing you know."

The Facebook posts warn young Slavic women are going door to door in Gilbert, trying to sell books.  The post says it's a scam and claims the women are really trying to solicit young girls for sex trafficking.

Fristikova asked, "To be honest, I was like.. what does it mean?"

Maria is 22, from Slovakia and goes to college in Prague. She studies business administration and hopes to own her own business one day.  This is her third year selling books for Southwestern Advantage.  The money she earns helps her pay for college.

Parents have been calling the police, concerned about the Facebook post.

Gilbert police issued a statement saying they "...have no evidence to substantiate the claims. The women have a valid license to sell door-to-door, and there have been no reports of criminal activity against them."

Maria says even though this week has been tough, she's not going to give up.

"You never give up.  I will finish the summer, I will not go back because then I will fail."

And Maria lives with a host family in Gilbert.  That family tells us she's out of the house at 6:30 a.m. and works until 9 p.m. She also works six days a week.
