Cops In The Crosshairs: Police Officer Shot At On Patrol

Posted: Updated:
San Bernardino, CA -

Just after midnight a San Bernardino police officer was driving alone in his squad car west bound on Rialto Avenue near Macy when something was fired at the car that shattered the passenger side front window. Sources close to the investigation told me it appeared that "bb's, pellets or, possibly and airsoft rifle" was what shot out the window. When San Bernardino Chief of Police Robert Handy held a news conference this morning to talk about the incident he said it could have been a pellet, but lead bullets had not been ruled out. The officer did have some minor arm injury from flying glass.

The bigger story here, though, is that this was the third incident in as many weeks that an officer has been fired upon. The chief said in the newser - and, in my one-on-one - that he doesn't think these things are connected, but he and his officers are concerned.

One detective told me he's looking over his shoulder more and so are some of his colleagues.
