Thieves use pickup truck to smash, steal ATMs in the DC area

Posted: Updated:

Thieves used a pickup truck to smash their way into a Maryland gas station overnight to steal an automatic teller machine inside. 90 minutes later, another heist of an ATM took place in nearby Washington D.C.

Security video captured both incidents.

At 3:45 a.m. Friday at the Exxon gas station on Indian Head Highway in Fort Washington, Md., bandits using a dark pickup truck carefully positioned the vehicle, then drove backwards and smashed their way into the store, knocking the ATM off its bolted base onto the ground. They then pulled the truck out of the opening, and on foot, made their way into the store, so they could carry the ATM to the bed of the pickup truck. Then they zoomed off into the night.

An hour and a half later around 5:15 a.m., a dark pickup truck arrived in the lot of the Exxon gas station on Benning Road in Northeast D.C. This time, the ATM was outside the store. The bandits again used the back of their pickup truck to knock the machine off its base, and within seconds, they picked up the ATM, put it in the bed, and roared off on 25th Place in the direction of RFK Stadium.

Within hours, several ATMs were discovered near the House of Praise Church on Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue. An employee spotted an abandoned, dark pickup truck in a back parking lot with a damaged ATM in the bed.

About a hundred feet away, in a weedy lot, at least one other damaged ATM was discovered.

According to a source, serial numbers identified the ATM in the pickup as the one from the Maryland incident, and the ATM in the weeds as the one from the D.C. theft.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Prince George's County police are also investigating to determine whether the theft of a third ATM may be connected. They say the suspects in that case used a white Ford pickup truck to knock over and steal an ATM from the Xtra Fuels gas station in the 3700 block of Crain Highway early Thursday morning. The white truck has since been recovered in Northeast D.C.
