A beautified lake means better business for echo park. Owners of Masa cafe in echo park, say they're anticipating more business now that the lake has reopened. Owner Rhonda Reynolds says "I think a lot of people enjoying the lake, its hot this summer, so they'll want to come somewhere with air conditioning and have something to eat or drink."
Masa cafe opened 9 years ago and is just a few blocks from the lake. While it didn't see a slump in sales during the renovations, now it's seeing more non-echo park patrons come through their doors.
Reynolds says " this is echo park so it was met with trepidation what are they going to do to the lake but its gorgeous and we are just thrilled."
The lake was closed for 18 months for a 45 million dollar make over. While it was an inconvenience for area residents Council member Mitch O'Farrell says it could have been much worse. "We delivered it on time and under budget so we did pretty well there."
The owner of Origami vinyl says the lake renovations were worth it since its now a bigger attraction. Neil schield says "I think with anything in the city if there's improvement it helps business." And he too says "with the lake opening you just see a lot more people walking around checking things out. A lot of people who aren't from echo park."
Parking is becoming an issue but councilman O'Farrell says they are addressing the issue and can handle the extra visitors.
He also anticipates crime rates to continue to drop as it has been over the past decade since "Criminals like to operate when no one is looking. So get more people on the blvd we have a standard of respect for the neighborhood enjoy what we have and visitors have to live by these same standards."
Besides the paddle boats already out on the
lake, a new cafe is set open there this week.
