36 syringes wash up on Island Beach State Park

Posted: Updated:

ISLAND BEACH STATE PARK, N.J. (AP) -- Officials have not determined the source of 36 syringes that washed ashore on New Jersey's Island Beach State Park.

The beaches along the 10-mile island in Ocean County remain open and no other needles have turned up after the syringes were first spotted on Friday.

Environmental Protection Department spokesman Larry Ragonese tells the Asbury Park Press the syringes were of a type typically used by diabetics.

Ragonese says the wind and weather could have brought the debris from the New York harbor area.

Princeton University has agreed to contribute more than $24 million over the next seven years to the town of Princeton. The deal was announced Thursday and is set for consideration by the town government's approval on Monday. The university and town officials frame it was as a way to resolve an age-old issue in college towns where much of the land is university-owned and thus tax-exempt.
