Lakeland man shot viral video of stuck Sea World whale

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A disturbing scene from SeaWorld in Orlando is all over the web. It shows a pilot whale that got stranded on a ledge, and couldn't get back in the water.

An increasingly angry audience screams for someone to help the animal.

The video was shot ten days ago by a Lakeland man who was at Sea World with his family to celebrate his daughter's 11th birthday.

Carlo De Leonibus said it happened while the audience was waiting for a show to begin.

The pilot whale got stranded on the edge of the pool.

"After about ten minutes, I realized it was in distress. I felt very concerned, so I went down and told one of the employees who just dismally responded and said 'it's having fun, it's playing.' He didn't even bother to look at the whale, so I went back to the crowd. I began recording. In that time you can hear people upset, people were screaming."

De Leonibus says a voice came over the loud speaker assuring the crowd the pilot whale was fine, but he estimates it was 25 to 30 minutes before two trainers appeared and pushed the whale back in.

SeaWorld has issued a statement about the video:

"Pilot whales come out on the ledge all the time and always get back into the deeper water without any problem. The younger animals are still inexperienced and sometimes it takes them a bit longer."

Sea World says the whale was never in any danger.
