DETROIT (WJBK) -

A close family member called us from the hospital bedside of her 37-year-old cousin, who is in critical condition after she was discovered beaten, bloodied, burned and possibly sexually assaulted.

"We're all hurt. We're all upset right now, completely devastated. We need to know exactly what happened. That's all we kind of want to know," she said. "No one deserves to be treated this way."

A woman walking south on Iris near Elmira on Detroit's west side around 7 a.m. Saturday discovered the victim, who could be heard moaning in pain, lodged underneath a couch in a field.

Less than 24 hours before and less than a mile away on Eaton, a 22-year-old woman was discovered in the same condition. Employees at a nearby business saw smoke and flames, and when they went to check it out, they discovered a van that had been set on fire and a woman nearby also beaten, burned and naked. She is also in the hospital in stable condition.

Sources said they believe the cases are connected. Both women are prostitutes and appear to have been attacked by the same man with the same M.O.

Police are working to find who committed these heinous crimes. Rape kits have been given to both women, and we were told investigators hope DNA will help lead to the person responsible.

If anyone has any information about these crimes, they are asked to call Detroit Police Sex Crimes or the Criminal Investigations Bureau.
