Pastor Rick Warren Returns to Sermons At Saddleback

Posted: Updated:
Lake Forest, CA -

(FOX 11) Beloved Orange County Pastor Rick Warren gave his first sermon at Saddleback Church, .since his son's suicide in early April.

"On the day Matthew died, Kay and I had this fear because we hadn't heard from him all day, that our greatest fear had happened," said Pastor Warren.

Pastor warrens wife, Kay Warren, also talked about the family's struggles.

"I would be an absolute total liar if I said to you that my hope was not severely disappointed when my son passed away," said Kay.

Saddleback is one of the largest mega churches in the country, with more than 20,000 followers.  According to the church, about 6500 of those members were at Saturday's 4:30 service.

"It was awesome. Just really felt the love of his congregation and people wanted to be with him, just like a family member. He's helped us through so much we wanted to be there for him," said Deanna Maas, one of the people at the service.

"We're just here to support him and to let him know that we love him and we love his teaching," said Velina Carter, another member of the church.

Pastor Warren's son, Matthew Warren, shot himself at his Mission Viejo home April 5th. He was only 27.  He reportedly used an unregistered gun he bought online.

"My son was robbed of his life by mental illness," said Pastor Warren.
