PHOENIX -

Imagine this: You open the door first thing in the morning and there on your doorstep is a sick puppy in a box.

Well that's exactly what happened to one valley agency.  Now they're looking for a new home for the little guy.

This little guy has a story to share -- if only he could tell it.  He's part of growing number of animals left on the county's doorstep.

"It's happening early in the morning or at night when no one is here, so employees are coming in and finding a box out in front of the employee entrance," said Melissa Gable of Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.

Gable says the five week old puppy was sick with an intestinal parasite.  Each day he's getting better, but, others aren't as fortunate.

"The heat can be very harmful to the animals.. some can die if they're left out in the heat too long,' said MCACC Lt. Michael Reynolds.

"When you  just abandon them in front of the shelter, we know nothing about them and we want to gather as much information as possible.  So if we can adopt them out and if we have all this background information, we can share with the public," explained Gable.

For now, he'll wait with the other animals who've been turned over to the county.  Until the right owner walks in to take him home to his new family.
