Trayvon Martin's Mom Calls Juror B29's Remarks 'Devastating'

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The mother of Trayvon Martin is in Philadelphia Friday to address a national conference, and she's reacting to a media interview granted by one of the George Zimmerman murder trial jurors.

Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, issued a statement Thursday night after hearing what the second juror to speak out, panelist "B29," had to say.

That juror, who only identified herself as "Maddy" for the ABC News interview, said in part that she believes George Zimmerman "got away with murder."

Maddy said she initially wanted to find Zimmerman guilty of second-degree murder but, in the end, her hands were tied by lack of evidence.

The 36-year-old mother of eight was the only minority on the panel. She moved to Florida from Chicago just five months before the trial began. She said she's having trouble sleeping and eating because she feels she was "forcefully included in Trayvon's death."

In response to the juror's comments, Fulton wrote in her Thursday night statement, "It is devastating for my family to hear comments from Juror B29, comments which we already knew in our hearts to be true. That George Zimmerman literally got away with murder. This new information challenges or nation once again to do everything we can to make sure that this never happened to another child."

In her interview, Juror B29 went on to say how she owes Martin's mother an apology but she said race never played a part in the jury's deliberations despite civil rights activists saying Martin was shot dead because he was black.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is investigating whether Zimmerman could be charge under federal civil rights laws, a decision Martin's mother supports. While he never mentioned Zimmerman's or Martin's names, he did vow to fight for equality in the criminal justice system.

Martin's mother is speaking at a noon Friday luncheon during the National Urban League Conference, which is being held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
