One inch of rain in one hour causes Flagstaff flooding

Posted: Updated:
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -

Flagstaff and other parts of northern Arizona got hit hard Thursday with monsoon storms, and the downpour caused flooding in some areas.

Storms also hit south of the valley, and in the metro Thursday, a big wall of dust picked up.

It's been a busy weather day, with storms up and down the state all day long. Some areas are dealing with flooding and a muddy aftermath.

About an inch of rainfall came down just in the first hour of the thunderstorm today in Flagstaff, creating flooding on roadways and even in some people's homes.

On Route 66 in Flagstaff, the water quickly rose. Streets looked more like rivers for a good hour today, making it difficult for drivers. Crews were on scene directing traffic through the flooding.

In the Siler Homes neighborhood, water rushed into several homes. Fire officials were on scene within minutes helping residents protect their furniture inside and setting sandbags outside.

I talked to one resident whose home got hit pretty bad -- his doorway faced the rushing water spilling into his neighborhood.

"There was literally a river coming through our house… there was about a foot of water… so what they had to do was knock out this wall to get it to drain into the ditch," says Marcel Gleason, Flagstaff resident. "Totally screwed up our house."

The fire department officials tell me they sent 5 units and about 15 firefighters to assist residents.

"With that those kind of calls we have to keep property conservation in mind, so we go in we have squeegees and certain tools we have to remove all the excess water," says Paul Sanders, Flagstaff firefighter.

They want to remind people to stay prepared during this time of year -- and if your neighborhood is prone to flooding, keep sandbags nearby.
