Gasoline company to pay $50K for post-Sandy gouging

Posted: Updated:

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (AP) -- New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says a Hudson Valley-based gasoline wholesaler has agreed to pay $50,000 in penalties for price gouging in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy last fall.

Schneiderman announced Wednesday that CPD Energy Corp. of New Paltz charged "unconscionably excessive prices" at six stations that it owns in Westchester, Putnam and Ulster counties. He says the settlement is the largest penalty paid by a single operator for price gouging on gasoline after the storm.

CPD operates gas stations in New Paltz, White Plains, Yorktown Heights, Yonkers and Patterson. Schneiderman says the New Paltz station raised its price for a gallon of gas by 47 cents after the October storm.

The state has reached price-gouging settlements with 42 gas stations, with total penalties of nearly $288,000.

President Barack Obama is going on a fundraising sweep through New York and Rhode Island as he continues to help Democrats raise money for November's elections. Obama headlines three events on Friday. Two in Westchester County, and the third is in Newport, Rhode Island. The New York fundraisers will benefit the Democratic National Committee, which is still paying off debt from the 2012 campaign season.
