DETROIT (WJBK) -

Jerome Collins left his home on Detroit's west side Tuesday morning locked up tight. He said he was only away for a short time, but that was all it took for someone to swipe what they wanted.

"I was very shocked," Collins said. "Very angry."

It was not the things they took that cost the most that made him mad. It was the possession that his family loves and cherishes the most that hurt.

"Took the dog," Collins said.

Mia, a two-year-old Pomeranian-Maltese mix, was stolen.

"To steal the dog was the worst that they could've possibly done," said neighbor Rosemarie Martin. "A dog is like your child."

"It's a huge problem across the whole U.S.," said Dearborn Police Corporal Jennifer Janiga. "Small breed dogs are worth a lot of money. They're easy to take, easy to hold and run off with."

"These bad guys are taking your dog, holding them for ransom, wanting hundreds and hundreds of dollars."

Meanwhile, Collins just wants whoever took his dog to return her.
