Arizona high court weighs school funding case

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona Supreme Court justices are now weighing an appeal of a lower court's ruling that requires the state Legislature to provide an annual funding increase to public schools for inflation.

The high court on Tuesday heard arguments in the case and then took it under advisement to issue a ruling later.

The Supreme Court is considering is whether a voter-approved law that restricts the Legislature's ability to change voter-approved laws allows voters to require the Legislature to spend money.

Voters approved inflation increases in school funding as part of a 2000 ballot measure.

School districts and education groups sued after the Legislature in 2010 instead only increased schools' transportation funding.
