Dog dies at NJ kennel on very hot day

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Last week's brutal heat wave seems to have claimed the life of a small French bulldog in New Jersey. 6-year-old Bugsy was playing outside when he suddenly collapsed.

Andrew and Danielle Collins said Bugsy was a part of the family since they were dating.

He died while at Dogs on the Farm in Atlantic Highlands on a 97-degree day. They say it wasn't just an accident; they are calling the death of their dog negligent.

The kennel admits letting the dog play outside for more than an hour.

The Monmouth County SPCA has charged the kennel owners with civil animal cruelty.

But the owners defend their facility, saying Bugsy seemed fine, and that the dogs had access to pools when outside. Owner Karen Leipzig said that the kennel would have done something had they seen it coming. She said the day before was very hot, too, but the dog was fine.

"It just happened," Leipzig said, "and we're very sorry for the owners."

Dogs on the Farm had been in business for 11 years and this is the first known incident.

Dogs on the Farm has changed its policy and faces fines.
