NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Yankees say the MRI performed by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad on 3B Alex Rodriguez revealed a Grade 1 strain of his left quadriceps.

The exam on Rodriguez took place at New York- Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday.

The injury will prevent Rodriguez from joining the team for its series against the Texas Rangers starting on Monday night. He is scheduled to return to Tampa, FL for rest and treatment.

Rodriguez played designated hitter on Saturday in a minor league game after feeling tightness in the thigh muscle. He has been rehabbing from surgery in January on his left hip.

In a statement Sunday night, Rodriguez said: “I’m extremely disappointed with the results of the MRI and I’m hoping to get back as soon as possible.”

Sunday is the last day of Rodriguez’ 20-day rehab assignment and will not be reinstated to the Yankees’ roster. He is officially returned from rehab, but he cannot play in any official minor league games since his 20-day rehab has expired.

The Yankees could petition Major League Baseball for additional rehab assignment for the three-time AL MVP since he’s sustained a new injury.

Security is being beefed up at Yankee Stadium this week. It is all part of Major League Baseball's safety plan. Ticketholders going to Tuesday night's game against the Houston Astros will notice metal detectors in place at some of the gates. They'll be asked to remove cellphones and large metal objects from their pockets before walking through them.
