Dad gets prison in a Phoenix child abuse case

Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix man accused of child abuse after his young son overdosed on a prescription painkiller has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 38-year-old Anthony Casillas also was sentenced Friday to three years of supervised probation for child abuse and attempted child abuse.

Casillas and the child's mother were accused of giving their then 2-year-old son a mixture of Kool-Aid and methadone at a Phoenix motel on Oct. 23, 2011.

Authorities say that caused the toddler to overdose. The parents allegedly gave their son the mixture because his gums were bleeding and his teeth were rotting.

Court records indicate the child had methadone, amphetamine, acetone and nicotine in his system.

The child's mother was sentenced to 10 years in prison in January plus lifetime probation.
