Pike Nurseries: Get summer blooms year after year

Pike Nurseries' GGIA professional, Melodie McDanal, shows viewers what they can add to their gardens to get summer blooms year after year.

Don't let the cloudy skies and recent rain keep you down – the sun is shining and there are a lot of different plants blooming right now. Here are some flowers that you can add to your landscape that will flower each summer!

Echinacea
 - Commonly called a "cone" flower
 - Daisy-like blooms that come in red, orange, yellow, purple and white
 - A sun-loving perennial
 - Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies

Butterfly Bush
 - The cone-shape flowers come in red, pink, purple and white
 - A sun-loving perennial
 - The size varies by variety
 - Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies

Daylilies
 - Sun-lovers that have great trumpet-like blooms in a wide array of colors
 - ‘Stella De Oro' daylily is a great variety that blooms repeatedly throughout the summer

Hostas
 - A great lower growing shade plant
 - Known for their foliage color, hostas do get tall stakes that will bloom

Hydrangeas
 - Choose from shade to sun varieties
 - A southern favorite for their large cylinder or cone shaped flowers

Azaleas
 - A great landscape shrub
 - Many varieties are repeat bloomers

Crape Myrtles
 - Sun-loving tree
 - Can reach 12 feet tall but there are dwarf varieties
 - Known for its summer blooms and great winter bark

Effects of the Rain
 - You may have noticed some things taking a little longer to bloom than normal
   -- Flowers need the sun to bloom so they might be blooming a little later this year
 - All the rain has made for very lush, gorgeous gardens
 - Make sure your garden beds are mulched
 - Apply a disease preventer since all the rain can cause fungus issue
