Abandoned Southwest DC church transformed into a work of art

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The moment Shane Pomajambo saw the boarded-up abandoned church in Southwest D.C., he knew what he wanted.

"Oh, I loved it. It was just a big blank white canvas," says Pomajambo.

He and a friend, Ian Callender, co-founded a non-profit called Blind Whino. The neighborhood watched last fall as an artist named Hense transformed the church's exterior. Work continues on the interior.

The owner of the church approved the project and allowed them to plan an art show called G-40. They are founding the SW Arts Club and hope the building will be used for community gatherings. They hope Southwest will become Washington's art hub.
