Drowning ranks 5th among leading causes of death in the United States, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. For children ages 1-4, drowning is the 2nd leading cause of injury-related death behind motor vehicle accidents.

Roberta Davis, Kohl's Injury Prevention Education Coordinator with the Children's Hospital of Michigan, has the following water safety tips:

 Water Safety Basics

  • Never swim alone: Use the buddy system at all times
  • Never dive head first into cloudy or murky water
  • Never leave infants/toddlers unattended in or near water: stay within an arms length
  • Actively supervise children in and around water, giving them your undivided attention
  • Refrain from the use of alcohol

 Main Factors Leading to Drowning

  • Lack of swimming ability
  • Unsupervised water access
  • Lack of close supervision while swimming
  • Failure to wear life jackets (Personal Flotation Device)
  • Alcohol use

 How to Prevent Drowning

  • Swimming lessons are very important as this lack of swimming ability is one of the main factors leading to drowning
  • Put a barrier (lock/fence) to swimming areas
  • Make sure pool drains have the appropriate cover
  • Remove all toys from and around a swimming area
  • Do not go into areas that say no swimming
  • Swim where a lifeguard is present but do not depend on a lifeguard to watch your children- they have an entire area to patrol
  • Do not drink alcohol while swimming/boating or in charge of children who are swimming/boating
  • Kiddy pools need adult supervision
  • Wear a personal flotation device (life jacket)
  • Always remember to wear sunscreen and apply liberally and often so as not to burn in the sun.

It's not just the styles that have changed with weddings over the years -- it's also the technology. Disposable cameras used to be the norm, but now there's an even simpler way for the bride and groom to get some candid photos of their special day.
