Man Walking On I-76, Motorcyclist Died In Overnight Crash

PHILADELPHIA -

Police say a man walking in traffic in the middle of the night on the Schuylkill Expressway and a motorcyclist who struck him were killed in a crash early Tuesday.

It was 1:04 a.m. when Arnold Khemdy, a 20-year-old from North Wales, Pa., was walking in the right lane of travel on eastbound Interstate 76, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

One of several motorcycles riding in a group struck Khemdy near the Conshohocken curve, throwing him to the shoulder, where police said he died of his injuries.

The motorcycle rider, identified as 40-year-old Hour Song Chheng of Philadelphia, lost control and was eventually thrown from the bike, landing in the roadway and also dying at the scene.

A third vehicle was involved but it is not believed that it played any part in the fatality, police said.

According to police, Khemdy had lost control of his vehicle and crashed it into a guardrail on a ramp from I-476 to eastbound 76 prior to the fatal collision less than a mile down the highway.

A FOX 29 writer coming in to work passed by the area shortly before the crash and reported there was a guy without a shirt on running down the middle of the expressway's eastbound lanes, right on the painted dotted line. Cars were stopping to see if there was something wrong, but the man was apparently punching at their glass windows with his fist.

Police were rushing to the area with lights flashing in response to the 9-1-1 calls when the deadly crash happened.

The expressway's eastbound lanes were closed from Interstate 476 to the Gladwyne exit but reopened just before 6 a.m., and shortly after that the Blue Route ramps to the Schuylkill Expressway also reopened.
