Promise Place helping young people at risk of becoming homeless

Posted: Updated:

Research in one Maryland County showed a lot of teens and young twenty somethings are finding themselves homeless. Some are now working to make sure the kids have a place to turn.

"Never in a thousand years". That's what she thought the odds were of her becoming homeless. But now, that's just what happened to this 21-year-old. She is in nursing school and working and grateful to have a bed for herself and her baby. "It would be devastating because what mother would want their child to be on the street?" she asks.

She is staying at Promise Place. It's a shelter that's the first of its kind in Prince George's County. That's because it serves 12 to 24-year-olds.

Jermaine Crawford is a Bowie native. He acted in the HBO series - The Wire. His organization, Code Blue, helped raise the money for the shelter. "It really takes my breath away because it all started off simply as a conversation. One thing led to another. This person met that person. This person wrote that check.

You close your eyes and it's like 'Whoa the shelter's here'. It's really a dream come true," says Crawford. The group is hosting a basketball tournament in D.C. this coming weekend.
