JOLIET, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A bat found hanging from a porch screen in Joliet marks the third confirmed case of rabies this year in Will County.

Residents contacted Will County Animal Control after seeing the bat at their home on Middletree Road in broad daylight, according to the Will County Health Department.

The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed the presence of rabies on July 11, the health department said.

No people were affected and a family dog was current on its annual rabies vaccination, according to the health department.

There have been two other confirmed rabies cases in Will County this year, according to the health department. A Plainfield bat tested positive for rabies July 9 and a Joliet bat tested positive April 2.

"Rabies is a dangerous viral disease transmitted to humans from the bite or scratch of an infected warm-blooded animal," according to the health department.
