CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

One person was killed and five others suffered "non life-threatening" injuries in a four-car auto accident on the Southwest Side early Monday, police said.

The crash occurred in the 4200 block of South Cicero Avenue about 12:45 a.m., police said.

A vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed struck a pedestrian before colliding with three other vehicles, police said.

The driver of one of the vehicles that was struck by the speeding car died at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to police. Five others were taken to area hospitals with non life-threatening injuries, said police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed a 34-year-old man died in the crash, but declined to release his name pending notification of relatives.

The wounded were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, Rush University Medical Center and Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.

The driver of the speeding vehicle is in police custody at Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, police said.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is reviewing the crash.
