Water service restored to The Wells Apts. in Stone Mtn.

After a painful 24 hours, water service was restored shortly after 10 a.m. Monday to the deeply frustrated residents of The Wells apartment complex in Stone Mountain.

The trouble started when a car struck a fire hydrant in the 5500 block of Wells Circle about 3 a.m. Sunday. Since then, gallon after gallon after gallon of water could be seen gushing out of the broken main and pooling onto the nearby streets. DeKalb County crews worked for hours to turn off the water, repair the main and restore service.

About 6:30 a.m. Monday, county officials said they could have the basic service back online, with water back into nearby homes by mid-day. It couldn't come soon enough.

"All day, all day long," said affected resident Tonya Phillips.

"Running, leaking water everywhere and absolutely no water in my house," she said. "I'm very displeased."

Inconvenienced and increasingly irritated Wells residents, who live along South Stone Mountain Lithonia Road, scrambled throughout Sunday to gather water from the gushing water main spray into buckets to carry back to their homes.

Mark Cain said, "In buckets, coolers, whatever you got."

Another resident said, "…Collecting water all day! I haven't taken a shower yet"

DeKalb County Public Works tried shutting down the system, closing valve after valve to the connected main pipe – without success.

Spokesperson Burke Brennan said, "Every available worker is here. We're acutely aware of the inconvenience. We won't rest until this is fixed."
