One Customer's Good Will Causes A 'Pay It Forward' Chain

It all started Friday, when one woman pulled up to the drive-thru at Heavenly Donuts in Amesbury, Massachusetts.

The cashier told her that the woman in the car ahead of her had paid for her coffee.

She wanted to return the favor, but no one was behind her.

So she came back the next day, bought the person behind her some coffee, and left. What happened with the next customer brought a warm feeling to everyone in the donut shop.

"She goes, ‘I have no idea who that woman is,'" recalls the cashier, "and I said, ‘Well, okay you got a free coffee,' and she said, ‘Okay, well I'll pay for the person behind me.'" And she paid for the next customer.

"And after that I was like, ‘Oh, we're three cars deep, four cars deep' and after about the fifteenth car, I started letting the customers know, 'hey, we're at seventeen cars in. You can either keep it going or break it.' And nobody wanted to break the chain."

The chain of "paying it forward" kept going through 55 consecutive cars!!
