Fire and rescue units have cleared the scene after a tanker truck carrying thousands of gallons of gasoline overturned late Thursday night in Bristow, Va.
Police say residents living near the accident scene are now able to leave their homes. An emergency shelter set up in the area has also closed.
The accident happened in the 12600 block of Braemar Village Plaza. No other vehicles were involved.
Firefighters estimate 7,500 gallons of fuel was spilled, but Hazmat teams were able to recover 1,000 gallons into a second tanker truck.
Crews used 1,000 gallons of foam to suppress gasoline vapors and minimize the possibility of a fire.
Firefighters performed an emergency decontamination on the driver, who was also treated and transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
The truck was delivering fuel to the Safeway station at Braemar Village Plaza.
