Manhunt for suspect who shot Cobb County officer

SMYRNA, Ga. -

A manhunt is underway for the person who shot a police officer in Cobb County on Friday.

Police say the altercation between the Cobb police officer and suspect took place at an apartment complex on Hurt Road in Smyrna Friday morning.

The shooting happened about 1:15 a.m. at the Concord Chase Apartments. Police say the officer was doing a zone patrol at the complex when he came across the suspect. The man ran off and the officer went after him.

At some point, police say the officer was blind sided and shot. The officer called in on the radio that he'd been shot. Police set up a perimeter as they searched for the gunman.

According to the Cobb County Police Department, the bullet impacted the officer's vest. The officer – identified as Danny Rogers -- has been released from the hospital. Officials said that he is expected to be OK thanks to his bulletproof vest.

"Officer Rogers is at home. He is in good condition and he was shot in the chest area -- right center mass with the bullet proof vest in the shock plate," said Officer Mike Bowman of the Cobb County Police Department.

SWAT has joined the manhunt for the suspect. An emergency notification  was sent to nearby residents to be on the lookout for the suspect and take extra security measures at their homes.

The shooter is described as a black male with a dark complexion last seen wearing a white T-shirt and khaki pants. He has low-cut hair with twists. If you have any information regarding this person or incident or see anything suspicious, please call 911.

CrimeStoppers is offering a $5,000 reward in the case.
