Tablet used for communicating and therapy taken from autistic child

PEORIA, Ariz. -

Most of use our tablets and iPads for browsing the internet or getting work done. But an autistic child in Phoenix uses his tablet to communicate because he can't speak.

But the tablet he relies on was stolen earlier this week.

This little boy started using his tablet a few months ago and responded extremely well. Now his mom is hoping the person who took it will give it back.

When 4-year-old Ramsey giggles at games on his mom's phone, you wouldn't realize he's autistic. But since his Acer tablet was taken Monday, he's frustrated because he can't communicate.

"I wish we had it now," says Mindy Weller, Ramsey's mom.

Ramsey's mom says they've used the tablet for three months to help Ramsey communicate, learn how to share, and for therapy.

"The other thing we would use it for is speech. The speech therapist would come, we would have it set up so we would have him do work, then use it as incentive to get him to do what we wanted him to do."

Monday, Mindy took her son to Arrowhead Mall where he enjoyed an afternoon on the playground. But when the family left they forgot the tablet, and mall surveillance video shows a man in his 20s walking off with it. New tablets cost at least $500.

"I want them to see who they took it from," says Mindy of the crook. "He's more anxious now then when we had it, the last couple of days he's had a few meltdowns which consist of screaming and throwing himself on the floor. It's basically a really intense tantrum."

On Tuesday Mindy posted an ad on Craigslist in hopes of getting the tablet back.

"They took it from him and just the thought of that is so wrong," she says.

Glendale police do have an investigative lead but so far no one has come forward. Mindy is overcoming a battle with cancer and the family can't afford to buy another.
