Monsoon preps: Inmates get ready for storm season

Posted: Updated:

One of the last places anyone ever wants to be is stuck inside Tent City. But what happens to the inmates when a monsoon storm comes slamming down on the country's most infamous jail? Where do they go?

We got a look at what the inmates are doing to prepare for such a scenario.

The heat in the summer -- inmates just have to deal with it in their tents. Same with the cold in the winter.

But when it comes to monsoon storms, there is a plan of action to get the inmates out of harm's way.

"Drop your flaps! Drop your flaps now!"

Dealing with a monsoon storm is no joke, especially when you are living in a tent.

The inmates in Tent City went through a drill Thursday, getting their tents ready, to make sure they are prepared when a big storm hits.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he and his detention officers watch the weather closely this time of year.

"Of course we use channel 10 because they have good weather predictions. My friend Munsey. He's never wrong," says Arpaio.

So when Dave Munsey says a storm is on its way, the inmates drop the flaps of their tents and tie them down.

Then the inmates are lead out of the tents across the yard and into a giant day room -- so they are safe from lightning.

"Normally they follow the detention officers' instructions. And we let nature take its course."

While we were in Tent City today, we saw inmates building and painting a number of white crosses.

I asked the sheriff what this was all about.

"Well... I can't tell you everything. As you can see they are making some crosses. But I'm not going to publicize what we are going to do with them yet."

So we'll just have to wait to see what the sheriff is planning to do with all those crosses. I'm sure we'll all know soon enough.
