2 men in serious condition after possible lightning strike in Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -

Two men are fighting for their lives after possibly being struck by lightning in Annapolis Wednesday.

It happened on a small beach on the Severn River in the Bay Ridge neighborhood.

John Martin says two guests who had been attending a crab feast at his home rushed to the water to secure some boats as the weather turned ugly.

"We thought it was going to pass to the south and then it came up on us very quickly," says John Martin.

And then witnesses said lightning struck right behind them. And two young men, 19-year-old Connor Benson and 23-year-old Alex Steele were knocked unconscious.

Jaimie Martin was on the beach with the two men when they were hit after leaving her dad's party. Benson is her boyfriend.

"When I was with him, he moved his eyes, so there's no brain damage. That's all I care about," Jaimie says.

Doctors can't say for certain how the men were injured because they don't have any obvious physical injuries, like burns. It could take up to 72 hours to assess their recovery.

"He could be paralyzed from the waist up, but I just want him to wake up, you know," says Jaimie.

Both men are listed in serious condition.
